#2 The Hero Serum - Barrier-first Niacinamide Support
THE HERO SERUM
Barrier + Composure
AM + PM | Water-based serum
Most skin concerns — sensitivity, congestion, uneven tone, oiliness that never really resolves — are barrier problems wearing different masks.
The Hero Serum starts there.
At 10% niacinamide (vitamin B3), it's formulated to address the root cause before chasing the symptom: strengthening the barrier so skin can behave the way it's meant to — calmer, more even, more composed. Less reactive to everything. Better at holding onto the hydration it has.
It is not the most exciting serum you will ever use. That's exactly the point.
WHAT IT DOES
Niacinamide at 10% is the daily keystone of a longevity skincare routine. It works through four distinct mechanisms that address the most common visible concerns of skin under stress:
Barrier reinforcement — niacinamide upregulates ceramide synthesis in the stratum corneum, increasing the structural lipids that prevent water loss and exclude environmental irritants. A 2000 study in the British Journal of Dermatology demonstrated measurable increases in ceramide and free fatty acid levels after four weeks of consistent use, with reductions in transepidermal water loss that continued beyond the treatment period.
Tone evening — niacinamide reduces the transfer of melanosomes (pigment-carrying organelles) from melanocytes to keratinocytes, addressing the underlying mechanism of post-blemish marks, sun spots, and uneven pigmentation. A 2002 randomised controlled trial in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science showed statistically significant improvement in hyperpigmentation versus placebo after 8 weeks at 5% — The Hero Serum uses 10%.
Oil regulation — niacinamide reduces sebum excretion rate at the sebaceous gland level, addressing oiliness without stripping or drying — the mechanism that makes oily skin feel simultaneously tight and shiny when treated with harsh cleansers.
Inflammation reduction — niacinamide downregulates pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1α and IL-8) in keratinocytes, reducing visible redness and the chronic low-grade inflammation that underlies both reactive skin and accelerated visible ageing.
Pineapple enzyme (bromelain) adds gentle surface smoothing — loosening dull, accumulated surface cells without the barrier disruption of physical exfoliants or strong acids. Glycerin provides immediate hydrating comfort as the serum absorbs.
WHO IT'S FOR
The Hero Serum was designed to work for almost every skin type — but it earns its name for skin that is:
- Reactive, sensitive, or prone to redness
- Dealing with uneven tone, post-blemish marks, or dullness
- Oily in the T-zone but tight or uncomfortable elsewhere
- Going through hormonal transition (perimenopause, menopause) where barrier thinning and reactivity increase
- Recovering from over-treatment, prescription actives, or a compromised barrier
- New to actives and looking for a safe, well-tolerated starting point
It is equally appropriate as a foundation for experienced skin that wants reliable, sustainable daily support.
HOW TO USE
Apply 3–4 drops to clean skin, morning and night, before moisturiser and SPF.
Morning is the ideal window for niacinamide — it pairs well with broad-spectrum SPF and helps defend against the inflammatory cascade triggered by daily UV exposure. Night use compounds the benefit.
If you have very reactive skin, begin with 3–4 days per week and increase to daily use over two to three weeks. Patch test before full-face application.
Layers first in the routine — apply before The Structure Serum if using both.
THE INGREDIENTS
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) — 10% The core active. Water-soluble, pH-stable, compatible with almost every other skincare ingredient, and supported by decades of peer-reviewed clinical evidence. Works on barrier, tone, oil production, and inflammation simultaneously — making it the most versatile active available without a prescription.
Ananas Sativus (Pineapple) Fruit Extract Contains bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme that gently dissolves the protein bonds holding dead surface cells together. A mild, daily-appropriate alternative to acid exfoliation — smoothing without stripping.
Glycerin A classic humectant that draws water into the upper layers of skin. Provides immediate comfort and helps the serum absorb without tightness or tackiness.
Full INCI: Aqua (Water), Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), Glycerin, Ananas Sativus Fruit Extract, Acacia Senegal Gum, Xanthan Gum, Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis Peel Oil, Cananga Odorata Flower Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Oil, Ethylhexylglycerin

FAQ
Is 10% niacinamide too strong? For most people, no. 10% is the concentration most associated with oil control and visible pore refinement, and is widely used in clinical and over-the-counter formulations. A small subset of people with niacin sensitivity may experience temporary flushing — not an allergy, but a conversion reaction. If this occurs, reduce frequency and build up gradually. Starting at 3–4 days per week is always a safe approach.
Can I use niacinamide with vitamin C? Yes. The concern about niacinamide and vitamin C reacting to form nicotinic acid (causing flushing) is based on outdated in-vitro studies conducted under conditions not replicable in topical use. Current formulation science and clinical practice support their co-use. If cautious, apply vitamin C first, allow 60 seconds, then apply The Hero Serum.
How long until I see results? Barrier comfort and reduced tightness: 1–2 weeks. Oil control: 2–4 weeks. Tone evening and hyperpigmentation improvement: 8–12 weeks minimum. Consistency is the only thing that creates these outcomes — daily use matters more than occasional use at high concentration.
Is this safe during pregnancy? Yes — niacinamide is considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is one of the most broadly recommended actives for use during this period precisely because it is effective without the contraindication risk of retinoids or strong acids.
